Bass up front...
One principle that is employed by some SQ gurus out there is having the presence of your lower frequencies up front rather than the more widely experienced "bass from the trunk" phenomenon. Although largely omnidirectional, sub bass frequencies can be difficult to predict due to all the varied interior configurations that each type of vehicle has. Even more difficult to achieve is having sub frequencies seem like they are coming from the front stage. Front stage sub-bass can be an illusion that is difficult to achieve well when subs are located in the traditional trunk areas. One way that some have overcome this problem is by mounting the subwoofer up front (in the dash or kickpanel areas) or as close to the front as possible. Mounting the sub up front can be a difficult challenge often due to the constrained space and limited availability of mounting locations.
This project incorporated a center console that houses two 10 inch subs (selectable to play one or two subs with a switch) and have a location to mount a convenient subwoofer level control. In addition, the relocation of a power outlet and HVAC outlets were incorporated in the final design. Carbon fiber wrap and synthetic suede were used to finish the enclosure and provide tactile surfaces that are in keeping with the overall theme and pleasing to the touch.
